SPRING SWEEPER TIPS

It’s time for spring cleaning and you’ll want to make sure that your TYMCO is ready for the task at hand; especially if you’re located in a cold weather area and your sweeper has been sitting on moth balls for the winter. Spring and early summer usually brings a lot of rain, resulting in runoff and an increase in the amount of sand and gravel that you will be sweeping. It’s very important during this time, that your sweeper has good seals and that all the sweeper components are adjusted correctly. You’ll also want to make sure that your water/dust control system is working well due to the increase in dust created from the runoff. Here are some very important sweeper preparation tips to help you ensure that you get the optimum performance you’ve come to expect from your TYMCO.

1. First, you should perform a general walk-around of the sweeper, checking each and every seal area. If you find that the seals are hard or flattened out, they should be replaced. Be sure to use E-6000 adhesive or an equivalent when re-installing the seals.

2. It’s also very important that you do a thorough check of your sweeper’s water/dust control system. First check and clean the water pre-filter. Next, inspect all of spray tips to ensure that they are functioning correctly and haven’t become clogged. Finally, make sure that the water pump is putting out the proper pressure.

3. Inspect the pickup head. Check the heads overall condition, making sure that there is no damage which may require repairs. Make sure that the seal curtains are still making good contact with the pavement in order to prevent dust blow-out. Check the skid plate settings and ensure that the blast orifice is properly adjusted, free of debris and that it is undamaged. Refer back to your service manual for these settings.

4. Inside the hopper, check the dust separator for wear and make sure the door is closing properly. It’s also a good idea to check the suction inlet liner for wear.

5. While in the hopper, check the screen, making sure that there is no damage and that it’s clean. If the screen has not been removed in the last six months, it should be dropped down and cleaned. Also, the top of the dust separator should be cleaned off.

6. Inspect the gutter brooms for buildup around the motor shaft. Cleaning this area will prevent damage to the motor seal from occurring. For maximum sweeping performance, refer to your service manual for setting the proper gutter broom spring tension adjustment and contact pattern.
